Mark Making began as a response to a request from the Burchfield Penney Art Center to demonstrate and interpret my drawings to visitors in a hands-on experience that explains how my drawings are made, what inspires them, and how long they take from the first to last mark. The installation quickly became more than a lesson in drawing and the time invested in a work of art.

This is now a mobile project I bring to communities of all ages. In increments of time, participants are asked to document what they see with graphite marks and no erasers into one inch squares. Their marks are incorporated and comprise an image of the earth. Each individual is represented with their values and personal marks, no matter the level of ability. The completed image demonstrates the powerful significance of the marks we give and receive.

Congratulations to The Park School community! Thank you for the opportunity to bring this project to you. Thank you to Stephen Powell for documenting the process and affecting responses captured in this beautiful video. A final thank you to Lisa Langer and Pencil in the River Studio for your outstanding dedication to excellence.
